Baths of Tivoli

Located on the slopes of the Tiburtini mountains between the Roman countryside and the hinterland, the city of Tivoli is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Lazio, thanks to the legacy of an ancient history when the city became an important cultural and economic centre at the dawn of the Roman era.
The Baths of Tivoli are renowned for the presence of specific devices which create water jets designed to ensure a full sensory experience, as well as for their sauna and Turkish bath, which represent the regional excellence in terms of detoxifying and relaxing treatments.

The thermal water of the Baths of Tivoli springs from Lake Regina and Lake Colonnelle at a temperature of 23° C; it was called “albule” by the Romans due to its whitish colour resulting from the gaseous emulsion that forms on the surface when the carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide dissolved in water are released. This water, renowned since the days of the Roman Empire, was nicknamed “aquae sanctissimae” (very holy water) for its healing properties.
It is mainly a sulphurous water.

At the Baths of Tivoli skin, respiratory, ENT, orthopaedic gastro-intestinal, rheumatic, cardiovascular disorders and rhinogenous hearing loss are treated.

TOURIST INFORMATION

Tivoli is famous for its Roman and Renaissance villas, adorned with parks and fountains with wonderful waterworks. It is worth mentioning, in particular, the Hadrian’s Villa, Villa d’Este and Villa Gregoriana. For nature lovers, the ideal solution is a walk among the olive trees of Pomata, a country road which winds among centuries-old olive trees, meadows and brooms; from the top of the hills of the Monti Tiburtini, it is possible to enjoy a magnificent view. The “Nature Trail” is a circular route of about 3 and a half hours which starts from the arc of Quintiliolo, passes through Mount Catillo, goes down in the Valle del fosso dell’Obaco a Fontana Vecchia then returns to the starting point; it is an interesting itinerary both geological and botanical. The area offers wine tasting tours to enjoy the typical products and dishes of the local cuisine.
