TOURIST INFORMATION
Pigna is located in the mountain part of the upper Nervia valley; the highest part of the territory is situated over 1,000 meters above the sea level. Pigna probably owes its name to the numerous conifers that once surrounded the area, as evidenced also by the emblem of the town which features two pine cones (from the Latin “pinea”.) In this area there is also the rural village of Buggio (from “bucinos”, calf) which, according to a legend, was founded by three robbers fled from Occitania. The historic centre of Pigna, of medieval origin, is characterized by the typical “chibi”, lanes arranged in concentric rings around the village. The buildings of artistic and architectural importance include the Church of Madonna del Passoscio, dating back to the twelfth century, the Piazza Vecchia square featuring the ruins of the medieval castle and the remains of the Romanesque Church of San Tommaso.
